10 Biggest Cruise Mistakes First-Time Cruisers Make (And How to Avoid Them)
Your first cruise should be exciting.
But for a lot of first-time cruisers?
It turns into a mix of confusion, unexpected costs, and missed opportunities—simply because of a few avoidable mistakes.
After more than 20 cruises with my mom, we’ve seen it all… and honestly, we’ve made a few of these mistakes ourselves.
The good news?
👉 Every single one of these can be avoided.
Here are the 10 biggest cruise mistakes first-time cruisers make—and how to avoid them.
1. Booking the Wrong Cruise Line
This is easily one of the biggest mistakes.
Not all cruise lines are the same—and choosing the wrong one can completely change your experience.
For example:
- Virgin Voyages → adults only
- Carnival → fun, party atmosphere
- Disney → family-focused
- Celebrity → more upscale, relaxed
- Holland America → older, quieter crowd
For example, budget-focused cruises like Margaritaville at Sea offer a very different experience… When compared to larger ships like Symphony of the Seas or more tailored experiences like Disney Dream Cruise ship.
My mom and I have always enjoyed our cruises because we research beforehand and know what to expect.
But if you go in with the wrong expectations?
👉 You might end up disappointed—even if the cruise itself is good.
Tip: Choose a cruise line that matches your travel style, not just your budget.
2. Choosing the Cheapest Cabin Without Thinking
I’ll be honest—I still do this sometimes.
Even after 20+ cruises.
But cabin choice matters more than people think.
Ask yourself:
- Do you need natural light?
- Will you spend time in your room?
- Is a balcony important to you?
Inside cabins are:
- dark
- quiet
- great for sleeping
But for us?
👉 We realized we spend a lot of time on the balcony, so now it’s almost a must.
We even once booked a guaranteed balcony and didn’t get our cabin assignment until just days before sailing—it was stressful.
Tip: Pick a cabin based on how YOU cruise, not just price.

3. Overpaying for Shore Excursions (Without Understanding Why)
Cruise line excursions are more expensive.
That’s true.
But what people don’t understand is:
👉 You’re also paying for security
If you book through the cruise line:
- The ship will wait for you
If you book independently:
- The ship will leave without you
And all your stuff?
Still onboard.
We’ve done both.
And honestly—it comes down to peace of mind.
Tip: Think of cruise excursions as insurance, not just a price.
4. Not Budgeting for Extra Costs
This one surprises almost everyone.
Your cruise fare is just the beginning.
Extras add up fast:
- WiFi
- drinks
- gratuities
- excursions
- specialty dining
And yes—gratuities are not optional
Please don’t remove them. The crew works incredibly hard.
In some cases, people end up spending:
👉 the same amount (or more) than the cruise fare itself
Tip: Always budget at least 30–50% extra beyond your cruise fare.
5. Skipping Travel Insurance
I’ve made this mistake before.
And I got lucky.
But not everyone does.
The one time we didn’t have insurance?
My mom fell onboard.
Thankfully it wasn’t serious—but it could have been expensive very quickly.
Medical evacuations can cost:
👉 $30,000–$100,000+
And in some countries?
👉 You can’t leave until your bill is paid
Tip: Travel insurance isn’t optional—it’s protection.
6. Flying in the Same Day as Your Cruise
This is one of the riskiest mistakes you can make.
Flights get delayed.
Flights get canceled.
Airlines have issues.
If you miss the ship?
👉 The cruise is gone.
No refunds.
Always fly in:
👉 at least one day before your cruise
No exceptions.
7. Not Checking the Daily Schedule
Cruise ships are packed with activities.
But if you don’t check the schedule?
👉 You’ll miss the best ones.
Today, everything is on the cruise app.
My mom?
First thing she does is check all the shows.
And if you don’t plan ahead?
You’ll miss:
- shows
- events
- reservations
Tip: Check the daily planner every morning.
8. Packing the Wrong Things
Even experienced cruisers mess this up.
We once made it to the cruise without passports.
After 15+ cruises.
Mistakes happen.
What matters is preparation.
Make a checklist:
- passport
- medications
- sunscreen
- essentials
Clothes?
Honestly, secondary.
Tip: Start your packing list at least a week before your cruise.
9. Poor Timing in Port (Rushing or Missing the Ship)
First-time cruisers try to do everything.
They:
- rush off the ship early
- stress all day
- forget to relax
Or worse…
👉 They lose track of time
Important:
- Ship time ≠ local time (sometimes)
- Time zones can change
If you’re late?
👉 The ship will leave
Tip: Always track ship time and don’t overpack your day.
10. Having Unrealistic Expectations
This is the biggest mindset mistake.
People expect:
- luxury for cheap
- empty ships
- no lines
- perfect ports
That’s not reality.
Cruises have:
- crowds
- lines
- busy days
And the experience depends on what you paid.
More expensive cruises?
👉 Usually better experience
But no cruise is perfect.
The key is:
👉 Enjoy the moment
My mom and I have loved every cruise—not because they were perfect, but because we made the most of them.
🧠 Final Thoughts
Your first cruise doesn’t have to be perfect.
It just has to be prepared.
Avoid these mistakes, set the right expectations, and focus on enjoying the experience—and chances are, you’ll fall in love with cruising just like we did.
