Cozumel Cruise Port Guide: Things to Do, Beaches, Excursions & Tips

Some cruise ports are good once.

Cozumel is one of the few ports that keeps getting better every time I visit.

I’ve been there three times on different cruise lines, and it’s one of the ports I’m always happy to see when I book a cruise.

Part of that is because Cozumel reminds me a lot of San Andrés, Colombia, where I spent part of my childhood. The turquoise water, Caribbean atmosphere, and hearing Spanish everywhere immediately brings back memories for me.

But nostalgia only goes so far. The real reason I keep enjoying Cozumel is that it’s easy to navigate, offers a huge variety of activities, and has some of the clearest water I’ve seen anywhere in the Caribbean.

Why Cozumel Stands Out

One thing I’ve noticed after visiting Cozumel several times is how easy the entire experience feels compared to other cruise ports. I don’t spend the morning trying to figure out transportation or wondering whether an excursion will be difficult to reach. Whether we’re heading to a beach club, exploring downtown, or taking an organized tour, everything tends to be straightforward. Mom also enjoys talking with the drivers and learning about local life.

That’s probably the biggest reason I recommend Cozumel to first-time cruisers. It’s genuinely hard to accidentally have a bad day here. On one visit we dealt with rain for much of the day, which normally would have ruined a beach-focused port stop, yet we still ended up having a memorable day swimming with dolphins.

Best Things to Do in Cozumel (2026)

Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park

Chankanaab is probably the attraction I’ve recommended most often to friends visiting Cozumel because it works for so many different types of travelers. If you’re the kind of cruiser who wants an active day, there’s snorkeling, dolphin programs, animal encounters, and plenty of water activities to keep you busy. If you’re looking for a quieter day, you can easily spend hours relaxing by the water with a drink in hand.

What I like most about Chankanaab is that it doesn’t require a complicated plan. You can show up with a rough idea of what you want to do and figure out the rest as you go. The entry fee for 2026 is around $29, although costs can climb quickly once you start adding food, drinks, or premium activities. During our visit, we kept things fairly budget-friendly by sharing an entrée and limiting our drink spending, which made it one of the better values we’ve found in Cozumel.

Paradise Beach (All-Inclusive Resort Day)

During one of our visits to Cozumel, we spent the day at Paradise Beach and had an excellent time. The setup is simple: you arrive, grab a chair, order a drink, and the rest of the day more or less takes care of itself.

The pool is huge, the beach is pleasant, and having food and drinks included removes a lot of the small annoyances that sometimes come with planning a port day. During our visit the food was surprisingly good, the drinks were strong, and the water was calm and warm. It ended up being one of those excursions where we stopped checking the time and were sad when we had to leave.

America’s Cup Sailing Experience

This excursion caught me completely off guard. When I booked it, I pictured a relaxing sail with some nice scenery. Instead, I found myself helping operate part of the boat and working much harder than I expected. This mainly happened because I was one of the youngest in our group, despite possibly being one of the most out of shape… While others sat in back relaxing, I was dying in the front, lol.

At one point I was cranking on a winch so aggressively that I remember thinking, “Wait, isn’t this supposed to be vacation?” The funny part is that the unexpected physical effort ended up making the experience even more memorable. Our team actually won the race, and years later it’s still one of the most unique cruise excursions I’ve ever done.

If you’re looking for a laid-back sightseeing tour, this probably isn’t it. But if you enjoy interactive excursions and don’t mind being part of the action, it’s an experience that’s hard to forget.

I booked this excursion during our cruise aboard the Carnival Breeze (you can read our full Carnival Breeze review here).

Snorkeling Tours

Pictures honestly don’t do Cozumel’s water justice. Every time we visit, I’m reminded just how clear the water can be. On a good day, visibility is incredible, which explains why Cozumel has developed such a strong reputation among snorkelers and divers.

I usually bring snorkel gear with me because there’s a good chance I’ll find an excuse to get in the water somewhere during the day. If snorkeling is something you enjoy, Cozumel is one of the easiest recommendations in the Caribbean.

Downtown Cozumel

Downtown Cozumel is worth at least a little time if you’ve never visited before. Yes, you’ll find plenty of souvenir shops and businesses catering to cruise passengers, but that’s only part of the experience. Walking a few blocks away from the busiest tourist areas gives you a better feel for the island itself, with fisherman working, neighborhood streets, and a more authentic atmosphere than many visitors expect.

One thing I’ve always appreciated about Cozumel is that the shopping environment generally feels more relaxed than some other Caribbean ports. You’ll still encounter sales pitches, but it rarely feels overwhelming.

Dolphin Experiences in Cozumel (Honest Take)

We participated in a dolphin experience during one of our cruises aboard Celebrity Silhouette. At the time, it felt exciting and memorable, and I completely understand why many families continue to book these encounters.

That said, my perspective has changed over the years. As I’ve learned more about marine mammals and animal welfare, I’ve become less comfortable with the idea of keeping highly intelligent animals in controlled environments for entertainment. That’s a personal opinion rather than a judgment of anyone who chooses to participate, but it’s enough that I wouldn’t book another dolphin encounter myself.

For some visitors, it may still be a meaningful bucket-list experience. For me, it’s one of those activities that I appreciated at the time but don’t feel the need to repeat.

Resort Day Passes in Cozumel

If there’s one thing Cozumel does exceptionally well, it’s beach clubs and resort day passes. That’s a big reason why the island works so well for repeat visits. Instead of feeling like you’re doing the same thing every time, you can easily try a different property on each visit and have a completely different experience.

We’ve only personally visited Paradise Beach, but other popular options include Mr. Sanchos, Playa Mia, Nachi Cocom, Buccanos, and Isla Pasión. Choosing between them often comes down to the type of atmosphere you’re looking for rather than which one is the best.

Transportation and Getting Around

Getting around Cozumel is refreshingly simple. Taxis are plentiful, fares are posted on board, and most of the popular beach clubs and attractions are only a short drive. There is currently no Uber service on the island, so taxis remain the primary option for most visitors.

One reason I enjoy visiting Cozumel is that transportation has never been a source of stress for us. Within minutes of leaving the cruise port, you can usually be on your way to whatever activity you’ve planned for the day, and same on the way back.

Safety in Cozumel

I’ve never personally felt uncomfortable in Cozumel. That doesn’t mean travelers should ignore common sense, but compared with some cruise destinations, the island has always felt relaxed and welcoming during our visits. We regularly leave the port area, take taxis, visit beach clubs, and explore downtown without issue. Like anywhere else, normal travel awareness goes a long way.

How to Make Cozumel Worth It

If I could give first-time visitors one piece of advice, it would be this: don’t spend your entire day in the immediate cruise port area.

The port itself is perfectly fine for shopping and grabbing a quick drink, but the real appeal of Cozumel is what lies beyond it. Whether that’s a beach club, snorkeling excursion, island tour, sailing adventure, or simply exploring downtown, you’ll get far more out of the destination if you venture beyond the first few blocks around the ship.

My favorite Cozumel days have never been the ones where I tried to cram in five different activities. They’ve been the days where I picked one main experience, relaxed, and let the island do the rest.

Final Verdict: Is Cozumel Worth It?

Absolutely.

After three times, Cozumel remains one of the ports that I’m always happy to see on an itinerary. Part of that may be personal nostalgia because it reminds me of San Andrés, Colombia, but even setting that aside, Cozumel simply delivers a consistently enjoyable cruise day.

The water is beautiful, transportation is easy, beach clubs are plentiful, and there are enough excursions to keep repeat visitors interested. Whether you want to spend the day snorkeling, relaxing at a resort, sailing, exploring downtown, or simply sitting on a beach with a cold drink, Cozumel gives you plenty of options without making the day feel complicated.

For me, it’s one of the few cruise ports that immediately puts me into vacation mode the moment I step off the ship.
