Norwegian Breakaway Review: Is It Worth It?(A ship Built for Fun and Options)

This Norwegian Breakaway review is based on my sailing back in 2013, and thing became very clear: Norwegian Cruise Line knows how to build a ship designed for fun.

Even looking back on that sailing today, the experience still stands out. From its vibrant atmosphere and impressive dining lineup to its modern design and nonstop activity schedule, Breakaway delivered a cruise experience that felt energetic, polished, and full of options.

But it wasn’t perfect.

While the ship shined in food variety, entertainment, and design, there were noticeable weaknesses—particularly in service consistency and the way extras were heavily monetized. Still, after that sailing, I walked away genuinely impressed.

Who Is Norwegian Breakaway Best For?

Norwegian Breakaway is built for cruisers who want options.

This is not a quiet, slow-paced ship. It’s lively, social, and constantly moving. Whether it’s dining, shows, bars, or activities, there’s always something happening—and that’s exactly what makes it work.

Traveling with my mom really highlighted this contrast. She naturally gravitates toward the shows, the nightlife, and the energy of the ship. Breakaway gave her endless options to stay entertained from morning to night. Meanwhile, I found myself appreciating the quieter moments—sitting on the balcony, watching the ocean roll by, or relaxing in the whirlpool when I could find a calm pocket of space.

The beauty of this ship is that it supports both styles of cruising. You can go all-in on the energy, or step back and create your own slower pace when you need it.

Cabin Review

Cabin Score: 7.5/10

The cabins aboard Breakaway are modern, functional, and visually clean. The design feels contemporary, and the layout is efficient enough for a comfortable stay.

That said, there are tradeoffs.

Storage felt more limited than expected, especially compared to other ships in this category. It’s manageable, but noticeable. The other quirk is the power system, which shuts off when your room card isn’t inserted. It’s easily solved with a spare card, but still something worth knowing ahead of time.

Balcony Warning

If you’re booking a standard balcony cabin, manage expectations—the balconies are small. That’s easily my biggest complaint about the cabin experience.

If I sail Breakaway again, I’d seriously consider either going with an inside cabin for value or upgrading to an aft balcony for more usable space. The standard balconies just feel a bit underwhelming for the price.

Food Review

Food Score: 8.5/10

Food is one of Breakaway’s strongest categories—not necessarily because every meal is outstanding, but because of the variety.

And on a ship like this, variety matters.

One of the biggest advantages is the number of complimentary dining options beyond the buffet and main dining room. It creates flexibility and keeps the experience from feeling repetitive. The food bars around the ship were also consistently convenient and well-executed.

In the main dining rooms and specialty venues, the biggest strength was consistency. Food arrived hot, which sounds simple, but it’s something many ships struggle with. Even room service held up surprisingly well.

Not every venue was a hit, though. La Cucina was the weakest meal of the sailing and one I would personally skip next time.

If I were sailing again, I’d prioritize:

  • Moderno Churrascaria
  • Le Bistro
  • Teppanyaki

Overall, Breakaway offers one of the more complete food programs in mainstream cruising.

Service Review

Service Score: 6/10

This is where Breakaway falls short.

Not all service was bad—far from it. Our cabin steward was excellent, and several specialty restaurant servers stood out in a very positive way.

But consistency was lacking.

The biggest issue was Guest Relations, which unfortunately left a negative impression. Without going into every detail, the experience simply didn’t meet the level of professionalism expected, and that matters more than people think. One poor interaction there can affect how you feel about the entire cruise.

This is clearly the area where Breakaway has the most room for improvement.

Entertainment & Activities

Entertainment Score: 9/10

Breakaway delivers here.

There is always something happening—game shows, comedy, live music, nightlife, and organized activities throughout the day. This is a ship that keeps moving.

Comedy was a personal highlight, and it’s easy to see why this ship works so well for people who want to stay engaged from morning to night.

My mom especially loved this side of the cruise—the shows, the atmosphere, the energy. It’s exactly what Breakaway is built for.

Pools & Amenities

Pools & Amenities Score: 7.8/10

Before boarding, I expected the worst—big ship, large crowds, limited space.

In reality, it worked better than expected.

Even at around 70–80% capacity, I rarely struggled to find space in the pools or jacuzzis. That was a pleasant surprise. I was still able to enjoy some quieter moments in the whirlpool, which for me is one of the best ways to relax at sea.

That said, the space is still tight for a ship of this size, and I can easily see it becoming crowded on a full sailing.

Extra-Charge Areas

One of the frustrations onboard is how many things come at an extra cost.

Vibe Beach Club is a great example—it’s a nice, well-designed space, but it’s behind a paywall. This reflects Norwegian Cruise Line’s broader approach: more options, but also more upsells.

It’s not necessarily a dealbreaker, but it’s something you feel throughout the cruise.

Internet Review

Internet Score: 7.5/10

The Wi-Fi onboard was mostly reliable. Speeds were decent, and it handled basic browsing and communication without much issue.

There were occasional slowdowns, and the logout page didn’t always load properly—but typing “logout.com” manually solved that quickly.

Overall, perfectly usable, but not flawless.

Ship Design & Condition

Ship Condition Score: 9.2/10

This is one of Breakaway’s biggest strengths.

The ship is beautiful, modern, and thoughtfully designed. The LED lighting throughout creates an upscale atmosphere that feels more refined than many ships in this category.

Breakaway has personality, and more importantly, it uses its space intelligently.

The Waterfront: Breakaway’s Best Feature

Feature Score: 9.5/10

The Waterfront is one of the smartest concepts in modern cruising.

It creates something many ships lack—a real connection to the ocean. With restaurants, bars, and seating wrapping around the ship, it changes how you experience being at sea.

This was one of my favorite areas to just slow down, sit, and take in the ocean—something I naturally gravitate toward.

It’s easily one of Breakaway’s defining features.

Bars & Nightlife

Bars Score: 7/10

The bar scene is solid, but not standout.

There’s nothing particularly bad here—drinks were good, and service ranged from decent to very good—but there wasn’t a single venue that became a must-return spot.

Good overall, just not memorable.

Value for Money

Value Score: 8/10

Breakaway offers a strong core product, but it comes with a very clear caveat: Norwegian Cruise Line leans heavily into upselling.

From premium dining and drinks to exclusive spaces, the extras add up quickly.

That said, you don’t need to buy into all of it. The base experience is still strong enough to enjoy on its own—you just need a bit of discipline.

Pros & Cons

Pros
✔ Excellent food variety
✔ Beautiful modern design
✔ Strong entertainment lineup
✔ Great activity schedule
✔ The Waterfront is outstanding
✔ Strong specialty dining options
✔ Good crowd distribution

Cons
✘ Inconsistent service
✘ Weak Guest Relations experience
✘ Small standard balconies
✘ Too many upsells
✘ Limited cabin storage
✘ Pool areas could feel tight at full capacity

Final Verdict: Should You Sail Norwegian Breakaway?

Yes—absolutely.

Norwegian Breakaway is a fun, stylish, and highly functional ship that delivers exactly what many cruisers are looking for: variety, energy, and flexibility.

Its strengths—food options, entertainment, and design—are undeniable. Its weaknesses, particularly in service consistency, are real, but not enough to overshadow the overall experience.

At the end of the day, this is a ship built around choice.

And for many cruisers, that’s exactly what makes it worth sailing.

Would I sail Norwegian Breakaway again?

Without hesitation.
