Half Moon Cay Cruise Port Guide: The Most Relaxing Private Island in the Caribbean
Important: This review is based on my 2017 visit to Half Moon Cay, before the island’s major redevelopment and rebranding as RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay. Some aspects of the experience may have changed since then.
Some private islands are built around attractions. They have waterparks, zip lines, shopping areas, and enough activities to keep you busy from the moment you arrive until the moment you leave.
Half Moon Cay takes a very different approach.
Before visiting, I knew Half Moon Cay had a good reputation among cruisers, but I didn’t fully understand why until I experienced it for myself. After spending the day there with my mom and family, it became clear why so many people consider it one of the best private islands in cruising.
The sand was some of the softest I’ve ever encountered, the water was crystal clear, and the entire island felt relaxed and unhurried. There was no pressure to rush from one activity to the next and no feeling that we needed a plan for the day.
What stands out most to me, though, is how long we stayed.
I’m usually the person who heads back to the ship early. I like having plenty of time and never feeling rushed when it’s time to return. At Half Moon Cay, that never happened. We spent the day swimming, walking the beach, and simply enjoying the island, and before we knew it the final tenders were getting ready to leave.
Looking back, that probably says more about Half Moon Cay than anything else I could write. When a place can make me completely forget about the time, it’s doing something right.

The Sand Everyone Talks About (And They’re Right)
I’ve visited a lot of beaches over the years, both on cruises and on land, and Half Moon Cay still has some of the most impressive sand I’ve ever experienced.
It’s incredibly soft, almost powder-like, and surprisingly easy to walk on. Some beautiful beaches can feel exhausting after a while because you sink with every step, but that wasn’t my experience here.
As much as people talk about the water—and the water really is beautiful—the sand was what stood out most to me. Even years later, it’s still the benchmark I compare other Caribbean beaches against.

Half Moon Cay vs Castaway Cay
One question I get when talking about Half Moon Cay is how it compares to Disney’s Castaway Cay.
We also have a full Castaway Cay review if you’d like a deeper look at Disney’s private island.
Honestly, I’m still not sure which one I prefer.
Castaway Cay has more amenities, more activities, and feels a little more developed. If you’re looking for things to do, Disney probably has the advantage.
But there are two things that really stood out to me about Half Moon Cay: the sand and the water.
To this day, I think Half Moon Cay has some of the softest sand I’ve ever walked on, and the water felt slightly clearer than what I remember at Castaway Cay.
At the same time, one of the things I like about Half Moon Cay is that it feels less developed. The beach is the attraction. You’re not constantly being pulled toward activities, shopping, or other distractions.
The truth is that I’d happily visit either one again. They’re both excellent private islands, and choosing a favorite probably comes down to what you’re looking for that day.

The One Thing I Don’t Love About Half Moon Cay
If there’s one downside to Half Moon Cay, it’s the tender process.
I’ve never been a big fan of tender ports. There’s something nice about simply walking off the ship and starting your day, and that’s obviously not possible here. Instead, you need to board a smaller boat and ride over to the island.
In our case, the tender was actually a glass-bottom boat, which was a nice touch and made the trip more interesting. Still, tendering adds extra time and a little more planning compared to ports where you can simply walk ashore.
That said, once we arrived at Half Moon Cay, I stopped thinking about the tender almost immediately. The beach, the water, and the overall atmosphere made the extra effort feel worthwhile.
Would I prefer a pier? Sure.
Would the tender stop me from visiting Half Moon Cay again? Absolutely not.

Food & Drinks
At some point, we took a break from the beach and grabbed some lunch.
The food was the typical private island barbecue with burgers, hot dogs, chicken, and sides. It was perfectly fine, but honestly, the beach was far more memorable than the food.
The drinks stood out a little more. There’s something about sitting by the water with your ship anchored in the distance that just feels like a Caribbean vacation.
Before long we were back in the water enjoying the island.

Free Seating and Shade
One thing I appreciated about Half Moon Cay was how easy it was to find a place to relax. There were plenty of loungers available, and I never felt like I had to rush off the ship just to claim a spot on the beach.
Back then, instead of renting an umbrella, we actually brought our own.
I know that probably sounds a little ridiculous, but it was an easy way to save money. We’d attach luggage tags to the umbrellas and send them with our checked bags before the cruise. It was a bit of a hassle, but it worked.
The funny part is that I probably spent a total of ten minutes under the umbrella all day.
For me, it wasn’t really about the shade. It was about having a little home base on the beach—a place to leave our things and know we had somewhere to come back to after spending time in the water.
At one point, a couple walked by and asked if the loungers under our umbrella were available. I remember thinking that nobody goes through the trouble of bringing an umbrella on a cruise just to leave it there for strangers.
These days I usually just rent an umbrella if I want one, but back then bringing our own was part of the routine. Looking back, even though we barely used it, I was still glad we had it.

Things to Do Beyond the Beach
Most of our day was spent swimming, relaxing, and enjoying the beach, but Half Moon Cay does offer a variety of activities for guests looking for something more active.
Popular options include:
- Horseback riding along the beach
- Stingray encounters
- Kayaks and paddleboards
- Jet ski rentals
- Snorkeling excursions
- Glass-bottom boat tours
- Nature walks and bike rentals
The horseback riding excursion is probably the island’s most famous activity, and it’s something I’ve always been curious about trying.
That said, the beach is the main attraction here. Many visitors—including us—are perfectly happy spending the entire day enjoying the sand and water.

Why We Stayed Until the Last Tender
One thing that stands out about Half Moon Cay is how long we stayed.
Normally, I’m the person who heads back to the ship early. I like having plenty of time and never feeling rushed, so I’m usually nowhere near the last tender.
That wasn’t the case here.
Our group spent most of the day swimming, walking the beach, and simply enjoying the island. Every time we talked about heading back, we ended up staying a little longer.
Before we knew it, one of the crew members was walking down the shoreline letting everyone know the final tenders would be leaving soon. There were only a handful of people still in the water by then, and somehow we were among them.
Looking back, I think that says everything you need to know about Half Moon Cay. It isn’t packed with attractions or nonstop activities. It’s simply a beautiful place to spend the day, and somehow the hours go by much faster than you expect.

Final Verdict: Is Half Moon Cay Worth Visiting?
Absolutely.
After visiting Half Moon Cay, what stands out most to me isn’t an excursion, a restaurant, or a specific attraction. It’s the beach itself. The water was beautiful, the sand was some of the softest I’ve ever experienced, and the entire island felt relaxing in a way that’s becoming harder to find.
What I remember most is spending the day with family, swimming, walking the beach, and somehow staying until nearly the last tender back to the ship. Considering I’m usually the person who heads back early, that probably says more about Half Moon Cay than anything else.
Would I return? Without hesitation.
For me, Half Moon Cay remains one of the best private islands in cruising and one of the few places that truly lives up to the photos.
