Bimini Cruise Port Guide: The Most Underrated Cruise Stop in the Caribbean
Some cruise ports are known for massive resorts, crowded shopping districts, and long lists of attractions. Bimini is different. Despite being only about 50 miles from Florida, it feels surprisingly removed from the busy, commercialized atmosphere that has taken over many Caribbean cruise destinations.
When my mom and I visited Bimini, we rented a golf cart and spent the day exploring the island at our own pace. We drove through quiet neighborhoods, stopped at beaches that looked almost untouched, sampled local seafood, and discovered corners of the island that most cruise passengers never see. By the end of the day, we both agreed that Bimini felt less like a cruise port and more like an actual island community that just happens to welcome cruise ships.
That authenticity is what makes Bimini so special. While the island has seen development over the years, especially around the resort and cruise facilities, much of it still retains the laid-back atmosphere that first put Bimini on the map. The pace is slower, the crowds are smaller, and the turquoise water is every bit as stunning as the photos suggest.
Out of all the cruise ports I’ve visited throughout the Caribbean, Bimini remains one of my favorites. It may not have the biggest attractions or the most excursions, but it offers something that many destinations have lost: the feeling that you’re experiencing a real place rather than a port built specifically for tourists.

Exploring Bimini by Golf Cart
If you’re only going to do one thing in Bimini, make it this: rent a golf cart.
My mom and I spent most of our day exploring the island this way, and it ended up being the highlight of the entire port visit. Instead of following a tour schedule or staying near the cruise facilities, we had the freedom to see Bimini at our own pace.
We drove through quiet residential streets, stopped at beaches whenever something caught our attention, and pulled over several times simply because the water looked too beautiful not to photograph. Some of our favorite moments weren’t attractions at all. They were the random discoveries that happened between destinations.
That’s what makes Bimini such a great golf cart island. It’s small enough to explore comfortably in a day, but large enough that you’ll constantly find new views, local businesses, and hidden corners along the way.
For me, the golf cart wasn’t just transportation. It was the reason we experienced the real Bimini instead of just the cruise port version of it.
That ability to explore independently is something I always enjoy when visiting cruise destinations, and it’s one of the reasons ports like Cozumel and St. Maarten have become repeat favorites for us as well.
If I return to Bimini tomorrow, renting a golf cart would be the first thing I’d do again.
A Random Stop That Became One of My Favorite Cruise Memories
One of the things I loved most about exploring Bimini by golf cart was that we could stop whenever something looked interesting. That’s exactly how we ended up at Joe’s Conch Shack, a small roadside seafood stand that turned into one of the most memorable parts of our day.
By the time we arrived, my mom and I were getting hungry and decided to give it a try. Joe immediately started telling us about his famous conch and lobster salads, proudly mentioning that people sometimes wait hours for them. After spending about 45 minutes waiting while only third in line, I had no trouble believing him.
The wait wasn’t because the place was packed. Joe simply operates on what can only be described as island time. Everything is prepared fresh, and he seems just as interested in talking with customers and passersby as he is in making the food. Since we weren’t in any hurry, we parked the golf cart, relaxed, and waited for our order.
When the lobster salad finally arrived, it was fresh and flavorful, although I have to admit I think Joe may have squeezed every lemon on the island into it. If you enjoy bright citrus flavors, you’ll probably love it.
The real star of the meal, however, was the conch fritters.
To this day, they are the best conch fritters I have ever eaten anywhere in the Caribbean. They were crispy on the outside, packed with flavor, freshly made. We ordered two baskets and finished them almost immediately. Looking back, ordering only two may have been the biggest mistake I made in Bimini.
Resorts, Pools & Beach Clubs
Although Bimini still feels far less developed than many Caribbean cruise ports, you can definitely see where modern tourism has made its mark. The most noticeable example is the Resorts World Bimini area, which has become the island’s main hub for visitors looking for pools, restaurants, beach clubs, and resort-style amenities.
This part of the island feels very different from the quiet neighborhoods and local businesses we explored by golf cart. The marina is lined with yachts, the resort grounds are well maintained, and the large lagoon-style pool creates an atmosphere that feels more upscale than you might expect from such a small island.
What I appreciate is that the development hasn’t completely overwhelmed the island’s character. In some cruise destinations, it can feel like the local culture disappears behind resorts and tourist infrastructure. Bimini still manages to strike a balance. You can spend part of the day enjoying resort amenities and another part exploring roads, beaches, and local spots that feel largely unchanged.
For travelers who enjoy a mix of comfort and exploration, that balance is one of Bimini’s biggest strengths.
Shopping, Souvenirs & A Small Reality Check
During our time exploring Bimini, my mom wanted to find a small souvenir to add to our travel wall at home, so we stopped at one of the local markets to look around. She eventually settled on a magnet with “Bimini” written on it in black marker. To this day, I’m still not entirely sure what she saw in it, because I honestly think I could have made a prettier one myself. She also had her eye on a T-shirt, but after waiting around for a while without finding anyone to help us, we decided to move on and continue exploring the island.
While my mom was browsing, I stayed outside with our golf cart and camera gear. During that time, I noticed a couple of people paying close attention to the bag I was carrying. Maybe it was simple curiosity, maybe it wasn’t, but it was enough to remind me to keep my belongings close and stay aware of my surroundings.
To be clear, I never felt unsafe in Bimini, and there were police officers nearby throughout the area. In fact, several police vehicles passed through while we were there. Still, just as I would in any destination, I think it’s smart to keep an eye on your valuables and use common sense while exploring.
For most visitors, shopping in Bimini is less about finding luxury stores or large shopping centers and more about discovering small local businesses, souvenir stands, and the occasional quirky item that somehow ends up meaning more than the expensive stuff. Judging by the magnet my mom brought home, sometimes the simplest souvenirs are the ones people end up liking the most.
The Beaches, Water Conditions & Swimming in Bimini
One of the biggest reasons people visit Bimini is the water. On a calm day, it’s the kind of bright turquoise color that almost looks edited in photos. The beaches are beautiful, the sand is soft, and the water is among the clearest you’ll find anywhere in the Caribbean.
That said, conditions can vary quite a bit depending on the weather.
During our visit, the ocean was surprisingly rough. Strong winds created heavy waves that crashed onto the beach throughout the day, making the water far less inviting than the postcard-perfect images you often see online. We spent some time walking along the shoreline and taking photos, but we never ended up having a true beach day because the conditions simply weren’t ideal for it.
The water temperature didn’t help either. We visited during the cooler months, and after sticking a foot in the water, neither my mom nor I had much interest in spending the afternoon swimming. Combined with the rough surf, it turned what could have been a beach day into more of a sightseeing stop.
Even so, the natural beauty of Bimini was impossible to miss. The color of the water was stunning, and on calmer days I can easily see why so many visitors spend their entire port stop at the beach.
If you’re planning a visit, just remember that beach conditions can change from day to day. Bimini is famous for its incredible water, but Mother Nature ultimately gets the final vote on what kind of beach day you’ll have.
Cruise Lines That Visit Bimini
Although Bimini remains one of the smaller cruise destinations in the Caribbean, it has become an increasingly popular port of call for several major cruise lines. Its location, just a short distance from Florida, makes it an easy addition to Bahamas itineraries while still offering visitors a destination that feels distinctly different from the mainland.
Today, Bimini is regularly visited by cruise lines including Virgin Voyages, MSC Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, and select itineraries from Royal Caribbean. Each line tends to market the destination a little differently, but the island’s beautiful water, beaches, and relaxed atmosphere appeal to a wide variety of travelers.
Virgin Voyages has perhaps embraced Bimini the most, using the island as a centerpiece of many of its Caribbean sailings. The line’s beach club experience has become one of the most recognizable attractions associated with the destination.
For me, Bimini’s appeal goes beyond any specific cruise line partnership. What makes the island memorable is the opportunity to step away from the ship, rent a golf cart, and explore at your own pace. Whether you arrive on a large family cruise ship or a smaller adults-focused sailing, the island itself remains the real attraction.
Things I’d Like to Do on My Next Visit to Bimini
One thing I want to be clear about is that my mom and I spent most of our day exploring the island by golf cart rather than booking excursions. Because of that, there are quite a few activities in Bimini that we didn’t personally experience during this visit.
That said, several of them definitely caught my attention and would be high on my list if I returned.
Snorkeling is probably at the top of that list. Bimini is known for its incredibly clear water, coral reefs, and marine life, and it seems like one of the best places in the Bahamas to get in the water when conditions are calm.
I’d also be interested in taking a boat excursion to explore more of the surrounding waters. Several operators offer sightseeing trips, fishing charters, and opportunities to visit sandbars that are difficult to reach on your own.
For travelers looking for something more adventurous, Bimini is well known for shark diving experiences. While that’s a little outside my comfort zone, it’s one of the activities that has helped put the island on the map for diving enthusiasts.
If the ocean had been calmer during our visit, I also would have spent more time simply enjoying the beaches. The water was beautiful, but rough conditions and cooler temperatures kept us from taking full advantage of it.
The nice thing about Bimini is that even after spending an entire day exploring, I left feeling like there was still plenty more to discover. That’s usually a good sign that a destination is worth visiting again.
Final Verdict: Is Bimini Worth It?
Without hesitation, yes.
Bimini is one of the most enjoyable and underrated cruise ports I’ve visited in the Caribbean. What makes it special isn’t a long list of attractions or massive tourist developments. Instead, it’s the combination of beautiful scenery, a slower pace of life, and the feeling that you’re experiencing a real island rather than a destination built primarily for cruise passengers.
Some of my favorite memories from our visit came from the simplest moments. Renting a golf cart and exploring at our own pace, stopping at local businesses, watching my mom hunt for souvenirs, and discovering Joe’s Conch Shack were far more memorable than any organized excursion could have been.
Not everything was perfect. The ocean was rough during our visit, the water was colder than expected, and some parts of the island moved at a pace that required a little patience. But honestly, those things felt like part of the experience rather than drawbacks.
What I appreciate most about Bimini is that it still feels like an island with its own identity. While development has arrived and tourism continues to grow, much of the charm that made people fall in love with Bimini remains intact.
If you’re looking for giant attractions, endless shopping, or a packed schedule of activities, other ports may be a better fit. However, if you enjoy beautiful water, local food, exploring on your own, and discovering places that feel a little more authentic, Bimini is absolutely worth your time.
It’s the kind of port that doesn’t try very hard to impress you, which is probably why it ends up being so memorable.
