St. Maarten is one of those cruise ports that gives you options.
You can go all out and explore the entire island.
You can hit the famous Maho Beach and watch planes land over your head.
You can tour both the Dutch and French sides.
Or…
👉 You can keep it simple, cheap, and just enjoy one of the easiest beach days in the Caribbean.
And after being here multiple times—honestly, I’ve lost count somewhere around 4–6 visits—I’ve done it all.
Island tours.
Maho madness.
Resort day passes.
And now?
👉 I usually just take the water taxi, grab a chair, and relax.
Because at some point… you stop trying to do everything.

Ships dock in Philipsburg (Dutch side), and right away, this place feels easy.
You’ve got:
- Shops at the port
- Clear signage
- Water taxis ready to go
👉 This is one of the most beginner-friendly cruise ports in the Caribbean.
You don’t need an excursion here.
🚕 Water Taxi to Philipsburg (Price + Why It’s Worth It)
This is the move most people should make.
- 💲 ~$7 one-way / ~$10–$15 round trip (2026 typical)
- ⏱️ 5–7 minute ride
- 📍 Drops you right at the boardwalk
Or you can walk (about 15–20 minutes), but in the heat?
👉 Take the water taxi. It’s worth it.
🏖️ Great Bay Beach: The Easiest Beach Day in the Caribbean
This is where my mindset has changed over time.
Before:
👉 “Let’s do EVERYTHING.”
Now:
👉 “Give me a chair, a drink, and don’t make me think.”
Great Bay delivers exactly that.
- 💺 Chair + umbrella: ~$20–$40
- 🍹 Drinks: $8–$15
- 🍽️ Food nearby everywhere
You’re:
- Steps from the water
- Close to the ship
- Surrounded by restaurants and shops
One time we even got “included Wi-Fi.”
👉 It didn’t work at all.
Still had a great day.

✈️ Maho Beach: The Craziest Thing You’ll Do on This Island
Let’s be real:
👉 This is why people book cruises here.
Maho Beach sits right next to Princess Juliana International Airport, and planes fly ridiculously low over your head.
And yes…
It’s as insane as it looks.
- Loud
- Violent wind
- Sand blasting your face
- Pure chaos
We even held onto the fence during a takeoff.
And let me tell you:
👉 If you let go… you’re getting wrecked.
At best:
- Road rash
At worst:
- Way worse
This is one of the closest things to a controlled-uncontrolled experience you’ll find in a cruise port.

- Watch traffic
- Leave early to get back to the ship

100% — at least once.
🌍 Island Tour: Dutch Side vs French Side
One of the coolest things about St. Maarten:
👉 It’s two countries on one island.
- 🇳🇱 Dutch side → more commercial, cruise-friendly
- 🇫🇷 French side → calmer, more food-focused, European feel

There’s a popular story about how the island was divided:
